Bulletproof Coffee: The What, Why, & How

If you’ve been following along my Instagram stories recently, you know that I am currently focused on decreasing stress and balancing my blood sugar.

So, what does this have to do with coffee?

First off, realize that cortisol is your stress hormone and that caffeine is a stimulant. Your cortisol levels naturally spike in the morning—that’s how/why you wake up.

When you have too much cortisol in your body and then add caffeine on top of it, it can send you into the “fight or flight” response. Have you ever felt anxious or jittery after your morning cup of coffee? This may very well be the reason. On top of this, the quick spike in cortisol may also cause your blood sugar to crash, which may affect your hunger and energy throughout the rest of the day.

In terms of holistically treating polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the main focus is keeping blood sugar and cortisol stable, therefore supporting the balance of the female sex hormones and reproductive system. Do you see where I’m going with this? You simply cannot successfully manage PCOS if your body is constantly anxious, jittery, jacked up on caffeine and having blood sugar and cortisol crashes all day long.

Why Bulletproof Coffee?

I’ve chosen to add Bulletproof Coffee to my day in an effort to decrease the spike in cortisol and the crash in my blood sugar after my morning coffee.

By adding healthy fats to your coffee, your body will not have these reactions—your cortisol and blood sugars will remain more level and you won’t feel so jittery and anxious.

Over time, I’ve found that my body reacts quite well to Bulletproof Coffee. I have a great source of energy from the healthy fats, I don’t feel jittery and I don’t crash. It’s a win-win for me.

My Bulletproof Coffee Recipe

  • 1 or 2 cups of coffee

  • 2 tsp Bulletproof Brain Octane MCT Oil
(You could also use coconut oil, but this is what I strongly recommend)

  • 2 tsp Ghee (clarified butter) OR Kerrygold butter
(I recommend keeping it dairy-free if you have PCOS to reduce inflammation)

  • 1 scoop Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen Protein: Vanilla Flavor
(Great for hair, skin & nails. Plus, it’s additional protein!)

  • Splash of vanilla nutpods dairy-free creamer OR dairy-free milk (I like Ripple)

Add all ingredients to a blender and process until frothy. Blending the ghee and MCT oil breaks it up into Micelles which enables your body to use it for energy.
