My Top Tips for Dealing with Outdoor Allergies

What I’m about to say might surprise you, so I want you to get ready…

Are you sitting down?

I’m allergic to horses.

No, I’m not kidding. I truly am allergic to horses, hay, and all that goes with it.

Over the years I’ve taken over the counter medications to help fight my symptoms, but it’s typical for me to have a bit of a stuffy nose or scratchy throat now and then.

One of my big rules is that clothes that I ride in or wear to the barn must go into a hamper in a room other than the bedroom. I want those allergens to stay as far away from me as possible. And, I always take a shower as soon as I get home from the barn so that I don’t have allergens on my skin longer than necessary.

You might think that I’m going to tell you that I bought an air purifier, but in fact I did not.

My husband did.

One weekend I came home from a horse show to a shiny new air purifier. At first I thought it was a bit of a ridiculous purchase, but after thinking about it, I totally understood the reasoning.

Not only do we own a horse, but we have three inside dogs too. And with my husband working outside on construction sites all day, we bring in a lot of dust and dirt and other daily that we don’t want to be breathing all night.

Over the last few months, we’ve fallen in love with our air purifier. It quietly cleans and deodorizes the air while ridding the room of dust, allergens, pollen, pet hair, mold, bacteria and more.

If you’re considering getting an air purifier, I’d recommend this one. It has a HEPA filter and the nighttime setting is great—the screen goes pitch black and the motor runs super low, but it keeps the air your breathing clean all night long. Great for large rooms, too!

Here are my top tips for dealing with outdoor allergies:

  1. Keep dirty laundry in another room (or in a closet).

  2. Take a shower before bed or immediately after arriving home.

  3. Wash your bed linens in hot water.

  4. Do not use a towel or wash cloth more than once.

  5. Sleep with an air purifier.
